Can a bill in collections be reduced without “settling it” without hurting my credit report?

A couple of years ago I was unemployed and had to go to the emergency room. Now the bill has been turned over to a collection company. Can I ask the collection company to discount, give a credit or something without settling the debt were “settling” seems like a bankruptcy on your credit report?
